2023 Top Twelve Gala Screening and Awards

Our 20th festival! We are so proud to have made it to this milestone - 20 festivals, 240 Top Twelve films, and about 700 teams of filmmakers! This year also coincides with the World Pride festival, so this year's theme is:

Filmmaker Bio:  Ruth Pieloor and Ujjwal Rai first worked together at Canberra Institute of Technology. Ujjwal is a filmmaker from Nepal who brings unique stories to screen. He has created numerous music videos and short films, some reaching 10 million Youtube views. Following his Diploma in Screen at CIT, Ujjwal is currently developing his first full-length film.Ruth is an established theatre and screen Actor, a Clown Doctor at the Canberra Hospital, improviser, drama tutor, and writer-producer, with 2 published plays. She is passionate about inspiring and encouraging artists to support one another, in order to strengthen and diversify local arts practices.

Filmmaker Bio: Dan Sanguineti is a Filmmaker, Producer, Director, Writer, Film Educator and Content Creator. He is currently the senior teacher at the AIE Film School, and is known for producing Canberra features Me and My Mates vs the Zombie Apocalypse, Theatre of the Dead, and Love Stuck: The Improvised Feature Film, as well as nominated Best Web Series, At the Phoenix, and CSFF Best Web Series Fragments.

Filmmaker Bio: James is a Canberra based filmmaker. He has worked on several films shot in the local region, including the feature films THE FURIES, SISSY, and IN VITRO, as well as multiple short films.

Hailing from the provocative world of financial planning by day, Nick lives a secretive double life as an aspiring writer and producer across multiple art forms by night, whilst Craig, an award-winning professional actor, writer and film/theatre maker, is really just trying to avoid having a real job…

Filmmaker Bio: Co-producer James Edgar Lim brings over 5 years of improvised comedy experience to combine with Co-producer and Director Zac Bridgman’s 5 years of stifled creativity as a public servant to present a unique office comedy. One night not so long ago, the two formed a simple idea: What if the magical knowledge that Aliens were real was crushed under the bureaucratic weight of the Public Service? They took their previous experience on Canberra film sets and called every talented person they knew with any film experience to bring you their first short film: DEAD.

Conservationist Amy Dickman presents the complexities of lion conservation by sharing the voices of rural African communities living with lions.

Filmmaker Bio: With his co-conspirator Chris busy frolicking in Vienna, Trent had to figure this one out by himself. His work as a freelance videographer on various documentary projects recently has inspired Trent's story for LCA this year.

Filmmaker Bio: Gabrielle Grégoire is an artist who is fascinated by the human experience and the natural environment that surrounds her. Gabrielle's unique multicultural upbringing and past works in Italy and New York City have engendered a passion for building bridges between people and cultures through film.

Filmmaker Bio: Ewout and Liz have been a dynamic filmmaking duo since meeting each other at UC in 2016, and have joined forces to produce multiple award-winning films. Liz has been involved with many previous LCA projects, jointly winning 'best director' in 2021 for her work on 'Sister.' Ewout has served as a writer, actor and editor in previous LCA films, but this is his first time competing since his film 'Wombat Man' in 2017, which went on to become a web-series.

Filmmaker Bio: Jade is a proud nonbinary artist with experience in theatre, film, and tv. No stranger to the LCA screen, this is their first year on the other side of the camera. Producing their own film has been such a surreal experience and they are very grateful to Lights Canberra Action for the opportunity to share their own journey of pride on the enlighten screen.

Filmmaker Bio: I'm a creative hailing from Siberia, yes, that far and cold land. It is already a year in warm Australia and I present you my first solo short film. Originally with bachelor degree in physics (those jokes that every Russian is a physicist, well, yeah) back in the day I realised that it wasn't my true passion. I see beauty in my own unique way, and I am fascinated by the stories of people around me, which I aspire to capture and share through my work. I am eager to continue exploring and expanding my skills as a videographer seeking to collaborate with other like-minded individuals and create meaningful connections.
