2024 Top Twelve Gala Screening and Awards

2024 THEME
What is the 'Story of Canberra?' That's what we were thinking about this year. We looked to The Canberra Story to give us some ideas and were intrigued by the idea that “We are a city born from a sense of purpose: designed to capture the way of life, aspirations and ideals of a nation.” Based on that, the 2024 theme was:

Filmmaker Bio:  Hi, I’m Angus, I’m a Director and Writer, I grew up in Central West NSW, studied Film in Canberra and I am currently based in Sydney. I have a deep passion for storytelling. I love consuming, creating and analysing film. Film as a medium has a vast impact, I believe it has the ability to incite internal debate, societal change and help digest the human experience. I am excited to be a part of this process and bring these stories to screen.

Filmmaker bio:  David Hatherly is a local Canberra actor & filmmaker, born with a walking disability. In 2022, he won a highly commended award at the Focus on Ability Film Festival, for his documentary ‘My Own Two Feet’. David takes on the role as director for his first Lights Canberra Action! film.

Caitlin Rose is a local Canberra actor who has been training at the National Acting School for two years. This is her first time being both in front of and behind the camera as she took on the role as producer, for her first ever Lights, Canberra, Action film.

Filmmaker Bio:  Sebastian Chan is a prolific writer/producer from the ACT. Sebastian graduated from the University of Canberra in 2015 with a Bachelor of Media Arts & Production. He has since gone on to earn an Advanced Diploma in Producing (Story, Audience, Finance) from AFTRS. A skilled filmmaker, Sebastian has a growing list of accolades including his award-winning short 'Bus Trip' (Focus on Ability Festival 2018), the ACT's first IGTV series 'The Red Thread' (Where You Are Festival) and winner of the ABC i-view 'Best Pitch' award for his project The Family at the 2020 Melbourne Webfest.

Filmmaker Bio:  Declan Shrubb is a Canberran filmmaker best known for his zombie comedy feature film ME AND MY MATES VS THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, his Quippurb sketch comedy troupe, as the host and producer of the Truly Rotten Potatoes movie podcast, and as a guy feeding a lion in an ad for the National Zoo and Aquarium.

Filmmaker Bio: Ty Mckenzie: Directing for the first time, Ty Mckenzie is a committed and experienced actor. He moved to Canberra 2 years ago and since then has worked tirelessly to learn and develop as a storyteller, whether as an actor, writer and now director. Ty has an ardent passion for creating art and stories and loves any chance he can get to work on a project.

Monique Lewis: Monique Lewis is a passionate graphic designer, creative director, and exuberant photographer. Her style is influenced by a strong mix of modern minimalism, alternative punk aesthetics, and a flare of grungy goodness to top everything off. Branding, visual identity, print, photography, and a variety of different art styles is where she really shines. But her a ‘can do’ attitude means she’s the perfect fit for just about any kind of job. As a former musician and performer, Monique's photography and collaboration within the music industry pays tribute to her former days.

Tobias Thorne: Since graduating from CIT in 2018, Tobias has worked on multiple projects in an assortment of roles. His passion for film making led to the founding of Nuance Media, a company focused on supporting the music industry in Canberra, mostly through the production of music videos, and promotion of local artists. Taking a step towards the more narrative side of filmmaking has been an exciting and rewarding experience. Tobias throws himself into every project he works on, and is always up to educate himself on new ideas and techniques to benefit any current venture.

Filmmaker Bio: I am a Nepalese independent filmmaker based in Canberra. My journey in filmmaking began in 2016, primarily focusing on music videos and short films. Several of my music videos have gained significant attention, with view counts ranging from 3 million to 11 million on YouTube. I began participating in film festivals with Lights Canberra Action in 2023, following the completion of my Screen and Media course at the Canberra Institute of Technology in 2022. Being among the top 12 finalists and winning the Best Original Music and People's Choice awards has inspired me to continue exploring visual storytelling.

Filmmaker Bio:  James Edgar Lim combines 5 years of mind-numbing PhD writing with Zac Bridgman’s 5 years of brain-dead public service to bring you their latest Zom-Com. One night not so long ago, the two formed a simple idea: What if you could speak to an undead loved one for just a single minute? After making their inaugural short film DEAD last year, they called on every talented person they knew with any film experience (again) to bring you their second short film: Till UnDeath.

Filmmaker Bio: Ruby Martyn is an aspiring writer director from Canberra who is currently in her second year of studying Film Production and Creative Writing at the University of Canberra. She loves filmmaking, screenwriting and most of all cats and horses, and has experience in the theatre and music industry, crewing and directing theatre productions and producing her own music.

Filmmaker Bio:  Ruby Kisiel is a Year 10 student at Perform Australia, finding her purpose through her study of stage acting, singing, and dancing. After having acted in many stage productions and a handful of short student films, Ruby has begun her own personal filmmaking journey with her entry into the Lights! Canberra! Action! Film Festival. Her directorial debut 'It Takes Time' explores her passion for storytelling and writing through the medium of cinema.
